About Rain!

Rain (she/her) is a Northern California-based artist. Working predominantly in mixed media character portraiture and design. She likes to explore concepts of ethereal and otherworldly characters by shifting between, paint, digital art, markers, and ink work. All in tandem with notions of gender expression, identity, and disability. Her work relates her experience with chronic illness to physical manifestations through original character designs.

Hi, hey, hello!

While my education started in botany, I couldn't resist the draw of art as well. Pairing the resilience and evolutionary qualities plants represent with humanity. The ethereal, disabilities, mental illness, self-expression, and death.

I create mixed media 2D illustrations to create the representation that I was looking for as a child. Creating depictions of disability stemming from chronic illnesses in ways where such sensations and experiences are not a limitation but rather are an additional facet to the individual. My work seeks to discuss the reality of chronic illness and mental health struggles while acknowledging them as a sign of human resilience regardless of what the rest of society thinks and how society treats us.

I’ve been dealing with chronic illness and pain since I was a child. Being undiagnosed for years and having to go from doctor to doctor to try and find a reprieve in my life has been an invisible but fundamental experience to developing me and my worldview. As well as experiences with shame and public humiliation in my personal life when needing to abandon stereotypical femininity for a more authentic form of self-representation and reprieve from pain. When I was young, I sought comfort in fictional characters that lived like me. No matter where I looked, chronic conditions were always a burden to be mystically cured at the end of the book and always a burden on those they loved. As my condition got and continues to worsen, those lingering memories and active experiences of a lack of representation encourage me to create my comfort characters. I seek to be able to create beauty and normalcy in characters like me so that perhaps others can have and find such comfort.
